Description: Scarce 1875 CDV photo of a competition shooting medal awarded to the Sumners Light Guard, Company E out of San Francisco, California in their match against the 12th New York, Company D. Articles from the June 8 (3rd photo) and June 29, 1875 (last 3 photos) San Francisco Examiner about the match are attached in the photos (for reference only). Photographer is Watkins' Yo-semite Art Gallery out of San Francisco. This image is unrecorded at the exhaustive listings at www.carletonwatkins.org. San Francisco had a sizable contingent of militia organizations in the 1850s and they increased with patriotic fervor when the war broke out. Named after General E. V. Sumner, head the Department of the Pacific in 1861 after Albert Sidney Johnston resigned his commission to join the Confederacy, the Sumner Home Guard was formed by fourteen young members of the First Congregational Church in San Francisco who signed the following statement: "Believing that our duty to our God and our country is paramount to every other duty, and that our country's safeguard consists in the ability of her citizens to defend themselves against the assaults of foreign and domestic foes, we, the undersigned, hereby form ourselves into a military corps." Originally known as the Sumners Home Guard at its formation in 1861, their name was changed to the Sumners Light Guard in the mid-1860s, and they were disbanded in 1885. Despite Carleton Watkins' success as an artist, he was not successful as a businessman and ended up losing his gallery to his creditor J.J. Cook in 1875. Not only did Watkins lose his studio to Cook, but he also lost its contents. When Cook and photographer Isaiah Taber took over Watkins' Yosemite Art Gallery, they began reproducing his work without giving him credit. * CONDITION: Very Good++ with some contemporary pen writing on the reverse. * SIZE: Measures approximately 2 1/2 x 4 1/8 inches.
