The consummate photographer of the American West, was Carleton Watkins (1829–1916). After a stint in Huntington’s store in Sacramento, Watkins moved to San Francisco, where he chanced into an apprenticeship with the daguerreotypist Robert Vance. In 1871 Watkins moved his studio to number 22-26 Montgomery Street. Located near one of his largest competitors, Thomas Houseworth, & Co, he named the establishment the "Yosemite Art Gallery". In the mid-1870s both photographers had studios in the first block of Montgomery Street. This image has the name and number stamped on after printing. Very clean and sharp image.
