Description: I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York ....... This is a rare December 7th, 1944 "Playgoer" playbill from the Pre-Broadway tryout of the CLAYTON ASHLEY, STANLEY ADAMS, FRED SPIELMAN and ARTHUR GERSHWIN musical "A LADY OF ?" at the Forrest Theatre in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (The production was titled "A LADY OF ?" during the out-of-town tryouts, but was retitled "A LADY SAYS YES" prior to opening January 10th, 1945 at the Broadhurst Theatre in New York City. The show would run for only 87 performances.) ..... The musical starred CAROLE LANDIS, SUE RYAN and CHRISTINE AYRES and featured BOBBY MORRIS, ARTHUR MAXWELL, JACQUELINE SUSANN, VICTORIA SCHOOLS (replaced out-of-town by MARTHA KING), PITTMAN CORRY, TATIANA GRANTZEVA, STEVE MILLS, EARL McDONALD, AL KLEIN and JACK ALBERTSON ..... Side Note: ARTHUR GERSHWIN (1900-1981) was the younger brother of George and Ira Gershwin. This was his only Broadway credit. JACQUELINE SUSANN (1918-1974) is best known for her controversial novels, most notably "Valley of the Dolls", but started her career as an actress, appearing in seven Broadway plays and musicals between 1936 and 1945 ..... CREDITS: Music by FRED SPIELMAN and ARTHUR GERSHWIN; Book by CLAYTON ASHLEY; Lyrics by STANLEY ADAMS; Sets designed by WATSON BARRATT; Costumes designed by LOU EISELE; Choreographed by BOOTS McKENNA; Ballets by NATALIE KAMAROVA; Orchestra Conducted by VING MERLIN; Directed by EDGAR McGREGOR; Produced by the Messrs. LEE and J. J. SHUBERT ..... DETAILS: The 16 page playbill measures 6" X 9" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes and list of musical numbers, but no cast photos or bios .....
