Roughly translates to English as: France and its Colonies: Illustrated Atlas of one hundred maps drawn up from the maps of Cassini, the War Depot, the Bridges and Roads and the Navy by Vuillemin. Text written from official documents and on an entirely new plan. bringing together in the form of tables 1° The administrative, political, judicial, religious, military, etc. Division; 2° The historical vicissitudes; 3° The Biography; 4° The Statistics; 5° The agricultural, industrial, commercial resources; 6° The educational or public utility establishments; 7° the detailed description of all the district capitals and remarkable places; 8° Finally the Curiosities of the moral physiognomy of each department and each French colony by Ernest Poirée.)Description: A very attractive early example of this page map accompanied by its description page from an 1850's Migeon atlas, La France et ses Colonies. Both the map and the description page are printed single sided, and the map is very nicely hand colored. Text in French. Paper size: approximately 14 by 10.75 inches, with roughness near margin where it was detached from binding; printed area is approximately 8.75 by 7 inches (not including the "La France" title above the map and the key or legend beneath), although this varies slightly from map to map. Margins are nice and wide which allows for a great deal of flexibility in framing and display. Maps are undated, but the edition has been roughly dated to 1858 by a fold-out map which was in the rear of the atlas, and by comparing demographic information against historical records. This atlas had maps of all the French Departments and overseas possessions of the time. Vuillemin's maps are noted for the extensive margin illustrations - vignettes, famous people, and views of cities. Each map was titled with a different font, and the fonts, decorations and marginalia often changed with each subsequent edition. Similar maps were printed in both larger and smaller versions over the years. Condition: As with all the maps from this atlas, there is general aging to paper and some edge wear, which includes small tears and chipping. Some spotting or age darkened spots to the margins. Some maps have small stains, smudges and marks which are evident in the images - a few have some writing as well which can be seen in the photos. Almost all of these flaws are restricted to the margins. The maps themselves are colored with some borders and routes traced or outlined in ink. Overall this map is otherwise clean and unmarked, and the accompanying text page is intact and legible as well. For all auctions, please consider the images to be part of the description. When a flaw is described I try to show images of it as well, but the general condition is reflected by the images. I will combine shipping for these maps.
