CHARLES LAUGHTON - CONTRACT SIGNED 07/05/1934 - HFSID 274930 CHARLES LAUGHTON The British actor, newly famous for his Oscar win as Henry VIII, agrees to star in The Barrets of Wimpole Street and Marie Antoinette for M-G-M. Document signed: "Charles Laughton", 23p, 8½x13. No place, 1934 July 5. stapled into a brown paper folder Laughton, under contract with a British firm, Motion Picture and Theatrical Industries, Ltd., signs his consent to a loan-out agreement between that firm and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer for Laughton's appearance in two film: The Barretts of Wimpole Street (as Elizabeth Barrett's father) and Marie Antoinette (as Louis XVI). Also signed by a representative of each firm. The traditional "Morals Clause" promising that "the artist will conduct himself with due regard to public conventions and morals ... [or] tend to shock, insult or offend the community ...", which was then standard in Hollywood contracts, has been crossed out, the deletion initialed both corporate officials. British stage and screen actor Charles Laughton (1899-1962) won the 1932-1933 Best Actor Academy Award for The Private Life of Henry VIII, which he had reprised from his stage role, and he was nominated for Best Actor Oscars for Mutiny on the Bounty (in which he played the infamous Captain Bligh, 1935) and Witness for the Prosecution (1957). Laughton, who made his film debut in 1928, starred in a long list of feature films, including Island of Lost Souls (1933), The Barretts of Wimpole Street (1934), Les Misrables (1935), The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Jamaica Inn (both 1939), It Started With Eve (1941), The Canterville Ghost (1944), Captain Kidd (1945), Young Bess (1953, in which he again played King Henry VIII), Spartacus (1960) and Advise and Consent (1962, his last film). The multitalented performer, who became an American citizen in 1950, was also a prolific stage director (he only directed one major film, 1955's Night of the Hunter), producer and drama teacher. Laughton also made several appearances on television from 1949, including roles in several early anthology series, and gave popular one-man tours, reading the works of authors including George Bernard Shaw and William Shakespeare. Laughton, who was a veteran of WWI, was married to actress Elsa Lanchester from February 9, 1929 until his death on December 15, 1962. In her 1983 autobiography, Lanchester said that Laughton, a closeted homosexual, had confessed his sexual orientation to her early in their marriage. The couple remained together until his death, but had no children. This fact may shed light on his exemption from the "morals clause" in the contract. Laughton never appeared in Marie Antoinette. His English compatriot Robert Morley was cast as Louis XVI instead. Staple and binder holes at top. Lightly toned, with light edge creases on several pages. Pencil notations (unknown hand) mark places for signatures. Otherwise, fine condition.
