Description: Charles Longueville (1829–1899), Sous Voiles Courant Grand Largue (Under sails running wide), etching 1864 This is an 1868 printing of the original plate by Philip Gilbert Hamerton for his important book entitled ETCHING AND ETCHERS, London, MacMillan & Co, 1868. An image of the book title page is show but it is NOT included in the sale. From the Met: One of the principal proponents of the nineteenth-century etching revival in England, Hamerton published this treatise on the medium that also featured the primary contemporary and historical practitioners. He took pride in offering his readers an impression from an original Rembrandt plate printed by the Parisian etching specialist Auguste Delâtre. The first edition (1868) of the book also included etchings printed from the original plates by Gautier, Haden, Daubigny, Ostade, Waterloo, Hamerton, Cope, Redgrave, Ansdell, Callot, Longueville, Weirotter, and others. We will be listing a number of them in the next week.
