Description: Original Chiura Obata - Garden with Deer. Signed by the artist and artist's chop. This is not a reproduction. From a series of contemporary architectural prints by Obata that are estimated to date from the 1950's, this print has been variously titled "Deer in Garden" as it depicts a modern Japanese garden with two deer grazing next to a small pavilion with a waterfall feature and Koi pond accenting the serenity of the surrounding landscape. The condition of this print is generally very good. The colors are strong. The paper has handling creases along the edges and margins primarily along the left and bottom margins and corners; the upper left corner has a crease which is less distinct than in the attached photographs. There are no discernible paper or pigment losses. The photographs depict these conditions. Please inquiry further re condition concerns. The print is sold "as-is." Chiura Obata (1885 - 1975) was a Japanese-American artist who emigrated from Japan to the US in 1903 at the age of 17. Initially a graphic artist, he became a successful painter leading to a faculty position at UC Berkeley (although was relocated to Topaz internment camp during WWII, where he directed an art school). His graphic prints from the "World Landscape Series: America" published by the Japanese concern "Takamizawa circa 1930 have become highly collectible. His Sumi-e brush drawings and paintings are likewise quite popular. The architectural prints, from with "Deer in Garden" is derived, are contemporary scenes with details of homes, gardens, panoramic views in happy family and domestic settings. In other words, Obata highlights with block print verve the life and style of mid-1950's domesticity.
