It is signed on the lower right.Artist Information:George Johannes Christiaan (Chris) Lebeau (Amsterdam, 26 May 1878 - Dachau, April 2, 1945) was a Dutch designer, painter and anarchist. He was the son of Jacques Charles Lebeau, operator and retailer, and Gretel Scholte. Lebeau was an Amsterdam basement dwelling born as the fourth and last child of the working class. Father Lebeau Lebeau was a socialist and accompanied him to the doorstep of the organ Law for All. On May 7, 1902 Lebeau joined in marriage with Anna M. Leverington, with whom he had a daughter. This marriage was dissolved on 27 February 1919. On May 7, 1932, he went to a free marriage with Maria Sofia (Sof) Herman. On 12 November 1935 he married in London with Ruth Ilse Voigt. This marriage was dissolved by divorce on January 14, 1937. Lebeau began training at the School of Applied Arts Quellinus Amsterdam from 1892 to 1895, then at the State School of Applied Arts in Amsterdam from 1895 to 1899. In 1904 he became a teacher at the Haarlem School of Applied Arts until 1914. Lebeau was a very versatile artist, he created designs for linen for linen manufacturer EJF of drawbar in Eindhoven, glass Leerdam, was faience painter at the pottery Haga Purmerend and designed by Amphora pottery in Oegstgeest. Besides designs for wallpaper, he worked with batik, painting, drawing, making bookplate and designing book covers and stamps, such as the famous series among philatelists Flying pigeon. He also provided decors, posters and programs Verkade Theater in The Hague where he spent three years was connected. After the batik he worked with damask, graphic design, free graphics, stage sets, lithographs, chalk and pen drawings, glassware, glass-glass, wall paintings, woodcuts, sculptures and theater interiors. His applied work includes tablecloths, bookbinding and book design decorations, posters, cartoons, calendars, banners, catalogs and diplomas. His other work includes creating landscapes, still lifes and portraits. Lebeau also worked as a teacher at a night school in the Jordan and from 1904 to 1914 at the School for Applied Arts in Haarlem and was there among others teacher Johan Briede and an important source of inspiration for the Haarlem artists Ab (Albert) Loots and Jan Mooijman. In 1908 he worked for a while in Antwerp and in 1914 he went six months in Indonesia with the theater company of E. Verkade. The work of Lebeau is mainly decorative. Lebeau also made wandtafarelen in the wedding hall of the former town hall in the Prinsenhof (Amsterdam) (1927) and in the Old Catholic Church in Leiden (1926-1928). Lebeau professed beliefs with great vehemence. He called himself a religious anarcho-communist. He was co-founder in 1904 of the Dutch Association of Craftsmanship and Art Industry (VANK). After the National Socialists in Germany in 1933 were in power, Lebeau concluded a marriage with a German Jewish refugee. During the occupation he used his artistic knowledge for forging documents. On 3 November 1943 he and his wife arrested for helping Jewish Dutch. He could freely come as he promised himself from illegal work to remember, but he pointed out. Through Vught, on February 24, 1944 where he had landed, he was on 25 May 1944 transferred to the Dachau concentration camp. He died there from exhaustion.
