Description: CITY OF JEHOVAH OrigNL c1896 Cabinet Photo PAINTING Erastus Woodson LYNCHBURG VA CITY OF JEHOVAH OrigNL c1896 Cabinet Photo PAINTING Erastus Woodson LYNCHBURG VA Click images to enlarge Description this is a SCARCE circa 1896 sepia-toned gelatin silver unsigned cabinet photo of the very large original painting of "The City of Jehovah" by Erastus H. Woodsman of Lynchburg, Virginia [the original painting is quite colorful, and digital prints are available from online sources] ~ this auction also includes a small PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINT of a PICTURE (the printed text measures about 2" x 2.5") that shows the printed description of how this painting came about [the small white rectangle at painting's right lower corner] -- transcribed here below (I could not find ANY other examples of this text anywhere online, thus my transcription): "CITY OF JEHOVAH, As seen by Erastus H. Woodson, of Lynchburg, Va, who on the 28th day of February, 1889, after having had a hard epilectic fit, went to sleep and slept for 21 hours. He saw a city made of granite and precious stones, mingled with diamonds, and streets laid off with gold beyond a river of pure blood; and there were two ways to this City - a straight and narrow way across a stone bridge. This was the only way by which to reach the city. There was a broad way that led to where there were two flat boats to cross the river, but would never get to the wall next to the city. The boats would fill up with people, then start and always sink in the blood, and would be seen no more. The boats would rise from below and return again to be filled. There was a three legged stool in the forks of the two roads with an open Bible on it. First on the bridge were a priest, two Sisters of Charity, and three Masons with spears on, and one Negro in the broad way, one Knight Templar, and one Red Man. I was standing under a tree looking at the people going both ways." A small (mostly indistinct) tag beneath the description I believe denotes Mr. Woodsman’s copyright, dated 1896 by "A.H. Spofford, "Librarian of Congress” 2,000 lithographic copies of this painting were issued; I don’t know how many other cabinet photos were produced Measurements: 6-1/2" x 4-1/4" in VERY GOOD MINUS condition - with a crease at left upper corner, and 1/4" vertical dent at lower edge; light soil on both sides of the mount Please see the condition note above, and please super-size the scans with this listing.
