Prior to the Civil War, civilian sack coats were worn a casual wear and as work coats. In 1857 the military adopted the sack coat as part of the uniform "for fatigue purposes." It is for this reason the coat is also known as a fatigue coat.This pattern is for a basic unlined sack coat. The design is based on the basic sack coat. The coat is styled so that it hangs loosely off the shoulders and falls strait to about mid-hip. It is not a fitted jacket. Fabric Requirements: 2-2 1/2 yards of 60" wide fabric. or 2-2 1/2 yards of 45" wide fabric for small and medium, 3-31/2 yards for larger sizes. 4 large military buttons.
