PURPOSE OF THE PATENTED DEVICE: (From the specifications in the original Patent application): "...My invention relates to toilet articles and the purpose thereof is to provide a simple and convenient hand washer capable of being instantaneously attached to and detached from a bowl or basin to enable a person deprived of the use of one arm or hand to bathe the other easily and expeditiously. It is a further purpose of my invention, to provide a simple and easily operated clamp and support for a toilet brush or similar toiler article whereby the same maybe easily applied to a basin or similar receptacle and rigidly held therein to permit the application of the hand thereto..." The purpose of this invention was to assist those with "upper amputations" or the temporary loss of an upper appendage (due to injury or immobilization) to bathe. The device's spring would clamp onto the side of a wash basin (or bowl) and the device would then hold a brush, cloth, sponge or wash cloth (so that someone who only had the use of one arm or one hand could more easily wash the other). If you don't think this was a useful invention, go to a sink and try to wash one of your hands - - - without using your other hand. And like mom always said, "Be sure to scrub under those nails." TYPE OF DOCUMENT(S): Original advertisement (directions and testimonials) and original order form to purchase this unusual device and a Tampico Brush. This listing is for ONE original advertisement -and- ONE original order form, selected at random, from a lot. The 1921 edition of "Lockwood's Directory of the Paper, Stationary and Allied Trades" lists the watermark of "Crown Linen" as being used by Rolland Paper Company, St. Jerome, Canada -and- C. W. Williams and Company, New York. FOLDS: None. CORNERS: Excellent. PEN OR PENCIL MARKS: None. HOLES, TEARS, DAMAGE / GENERAL DISCLAIMER: This listing consists of one original advertisement / testimonials and one original order form (two sheets total) selected at random from a lot. They may have some smudging, edge damage, edge discoloration, staining, sun fading, spotting, etc. (as one would expect from paper with 100-years of environmental exposure). ADDITIONAL NOTES: These forms were stored in a box for over 100 years (as a group) and are now being sold individually, as a set of two sheets (one advertisement, one order form). ABOUT THE INVENTION / PATENT: One of the things the United States did a lot of in the 19th century was go to war: War of 1812, numerous "Indian wars," Mexican-American Warm, Apache Wars, American Civil War, Yavapai Wars, Las Cuevas War, Garza War, Spanish-American War, Philippine-American War, Moro Rebellion, et al. Tens-of-thousands of American Civil War amputees likely created the "demand" for this unusual invention and other wars created even more demand for the device. Many soldiers wounded during the Civil War (1861–1865) as well as other wars, underwent amputations - where an arm, leg, hand or foot was removed due to injury followed by infection. In fact, approximately three-fourths of the operations performed during the Civil War were amputations. Penicillin? It wouldn't be discovered until 1928 by a Scottish scientist and then first used in 1930... In the mid to late 1800's, very little was known about the spread of germs, bacteria, gangrene and cross infection. Surgeons' bloody hands would work on one patient - and then the next - without gloves and without washing. Even the same bandages were used on multiple patients without ever being washed. Simple infections (by today's medicine) frequently became gangrenous leaving the surgeon's saw as the soldier's only salvation. Translation: Minor infection today and there goes another appendage tomorrow. As for those returning home from war, they needed to care for themselves, which included bathing. A simple task, such as washing one's hand, was extremely difficult for those who'd lost a hand or arm. Thus the "demand" for this invention.
