Combat is usually 4v4 mechs plus possibly infantry and/or other vehicles. You can buy miniatures, unfortunately, in terms of quality they do not even reach the average level on the market, but you can do without them at all (paper chips) or use alternatives (scale 6 mm, aka 1/285, Epic or railway Z, height original miniature of the most famous Assault 'Mech, the Atlas, is just over 2 inches). For those who want "easier" there are Alpha Strike rules, they are closer to modern wargames, not so deep and do not use cells. To get started, I advise you to familiarize yourself with the Battletech Core Rulebook Primer, it says what books are needed for what.
