Description: Collards - Georgia Southern Collard Greens Seeds - Heirloom - QTY: 300 Quantity: 300 Seeds (Approximately 1g) Georgia Southern 'Creole' is a very popular non-heading, slow-bolting collard with deep-green leaves on 30-36" tall plants. Tolerates light frost, Tolerates hard frost, High heat, Partial shade, Needs summer shade. How to plant: Propagate by seed Germination temperature: 45 F to 80 F – Days to emergence: 5-12 Seed can be saved 6 years if stored properly Sow seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before average last spring frost. Keep soil warm (about 75 F) until germination. Then keep plants around 60 F. Provide direct sun so plants don’t get leggy. When plants are 4 to 6 weeks old, transplant into garden 18 inches apart, in rows 30 inches apart. Can be direct seeded as soon as you can work the soil. Plant 1/4 - 1/2 inch deep, about 3 inches apart. Thin to final spacings. Collards are such a long season crop, they are usually direct sown 20 to 30" apart in mid spring. Wait until the cold weather has passed, so there is no chance of them being vernalized (which could cause them to bolt). Though Collards are most tender and better flavored when grown in cool weather, they do tolerate heat. Further Tips Store collard seeds in a cool, dark, and dry place in an airtight container to keep out moisture and humidity. When stored under these conditions, collard seeds can be expected to remain viable for 6 years. Very hardy, thrives as a winter crop and can be frost tolerant in temperatures as low as 0˚ F. Harvest young, tender leaves for best flavor. Great for fall. Collards are usually grown as an annual, but it is a biennial plant and will produce yellow four-petaled flowers in loose clusters in its second year. Those dry into long capsules known as siliques that contain the tiny seeds. To help reduce disease, do not plant cabbage or other Cole crops in the same location more than once every three or four years.
