Description: Henry SiebeConquest of the Sea- A Book about Divers and DivingNew York: George Routledge and Sons416 Broome Street299 pages plus 48 pages of Chatto and Windus advertising dated May 1874 This 1874 first American printing of a rare classic history of diving that was first printed in the same year by Chatto and Windus in London. The Preface notation is December, 1873 London. Henry Siebe (1830- 1885 ) was the son of Augustus Siebe (1788- 1872), an engineer and inventor of a diving helmet as well as other machinery. Book condition is very good as seen in the photos. Covers have minor edge and corner wear, but are bright and clean. Contents are equally clean and unmarked except of previous owners name and 1904 date….he and I may have been the only owners as I obtained it from his estate 48 years ago! Binding is tight with no hinge cracks. There is very little scattered foxing, and the primary flaws are the detached title and preface pages which have suffered some lower edge damage from being loose. These were never sewn and it is a simple repair to reattach them. I leave that to the new owner who may wish to have the edge damage professionally restored and that is more easily accomplished while unattached . _gsrx_vers_1653 (GS 9.7.5 (1653))
