Crinum Lily, Scabrum 'Stargazer', Jumbo, blooming-size bulb, NEW

Description: DESCRIPTION: Scabrum 'Stargazer' (name used by another collector/seller) is a species bulb that forms seeds and different clones/variations are commonly found growing in old gardens. We grow about 15 different clones. Stargazer has a higher bloom count and a longer blooming period than most scabrum. It is possible that this is also a scabrum hybrid that has been backcrossed to another scabrum. The flowers are white with bright red stripes and measure about 4" in diameter. The color and shape are great and it offsets well (forms new bulbs). We have observed as many as 11 flowers on 28" tall scapes. Mature bulbs reach about 5" in diameter. Every crinum collection should have at least one variety of scabrum. This is a great scabrum. Scabrum are low growing with leaves about 3" wide and 2' long that are wavy along the edges, almost ruffled. Ours bloom from April-October here in zone 9, northeast Florida. This is being offered on eBay for the first time in 2014. Currently we grow over 1000 varieties of crinum and have one of the largest collections in the world including about 350 of our own hybrids. BACKGROUND: Going by names such as "Milk and Wine" (Creole Lilies) with white blooms striped with pink/red and a trumpet shape, they bloom primairly in May and June but can occasionally bloom in July or August. These are an old garden treasure and easy to recognize even when out of bloom. The foliage is brighter green than most crinum with wavy rosettes of leaves that frequently lie prostrate against the ground. The bulbs grow very large to about 5" in diameter and are globular in shape. Scapes are fat and carry five or move milky blossoms marked inside and out with deep stripes of crimson. Each bulb produces several scapes with an occasional late bloom following autumn rains. Scented with a spicy aroma, they attract hawk moths. Although African, the precise origin of the species has long been in doubt. The first bulbs described by Dean Herbert were collected around Rio de Janerio, presumably carried along with slaves from West Africa (probably from Angola). These are commonly used for hybridization, since they are a species bulb which readily forms seeds. GROWING CONDITIONS: Bulbs thrive on rich, loamy ground where they do not like cold or damp during winter dormancy. This is the only crinum that goes dormant in winter. They are deciduous, usually losing most of their leaves after a freeze, semi-tender and suffer in hard freezes but tolerate as low as 10 degrees F if planted in acid, sandy soil. Loose earth holds warmth better than clay and discourages bacteria and winter rots. Plant up to 1’ deep in cooler areas. Zone 8 with mulch, zones 9 or higher should not require mulch. DESCRIPTION OF ITEM FOR BID: You are bidding on a Jumbo, blooming-size bulb at least 6 years old and about 3 - 3 1/2" in diameter which should bloom within 1 year. It should transplant easily. The bulbs will be freshly dug and shipped bare root. WE SIZE OUR BULBS APPROXIMATELY BY AGE AS FOLLOWS: A few varieties can take 6 years or more to bloom. Jumbo bulb – has bloomed at least 2 years, close to the maximum size for that particular plant (6+ years old) Large bulb - should bloom this year or next (3+ years old, close to, or at blooming size) Medium bulb - should bloom in 1-2 years (at least 2 years old) Small bulb - should bloom 2-4 years (current year or 1-2 year old offset) Seedling bulb - started from seed (usually in its first year of growth unless otherwise stated) PHOTOS/ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: These are pictures of our plants, so you know exactly what they look like and what you will receive.
