Alfons Mucha, a Czech painter born in Ivančice, studied at the Slavic Grammar School in Brno. He sang in the Petrov church boy choir to earn some money during the study. He was not admitted to the Prague’s Academy of Fine Arts and worked for a short time as a clerk at the court in Ivančice, during which time he prepared amateur theatre performances, painted stage sets and posters and designed invitation cards. Mucha’s first known and exactly dated drawing is an 1875 pastel drawing of Joan of Arc at the stake. A crucial change in Mucha’s career came in 1894 with the commissioning of a poster for Sarah Bernhardt. As a universally talented artist, Alfons Mucha created not only world-famous Art Nouveau posters but also statues, stage sets and other works of art.
