Born in Sussex County, Delaware, Clayton pursued a career in law and was admitted to the Delaware Bar in 1800. He served as the Attorney General of Delaware from 1804 to 1810 before transitioning into national politics. Clayton represented Delaware in the United States Senate as a member of the Democratic-Republican Party from 1824 to 1827. Additionally, he held the position of Governor of Delaware from 1828 to 1829. Clayton's contributions to Delaware's governance and his role in shaping its political direction during this period remain noteworthy aspects of his legacy.Two octavos, xii, 485 pages; v, 519, xix pages, bound in period full leather with gilt-lettered spine labels.
