Rare authentic engraving from 1675 depicting the black painter known as “ Higiemon” Depicted with pearl earring holding a paintbrush. His origin is uncertain but is believed to have been an African slave from the West Indies that was brought to Italy and worked in aristocratic household, whom might have assisted with his artistic career. Records show that he lived and worked as a painter in Vienna, Italy circa 1670-80. And that he chose the name “Higiemon” as a tribute to Haimon, an 5th-century BC Ancient Greek painter.
