Description: Cornelius was a true "one-hit wonder" with his 1858 comic setting of material taken from "A Thousand and One Nights". The colorful and inventive orchestration suggested the influence of Berlioz yet, although he did not rely heavily on motivic development, this opera was a strong influence on Die Meistersinger and on Wolf's Der Corregidor and it was greeted as the first operatic product of the Lisztian school. Since the EMI Schwartzkopf/ Gedda recording from 1956 is not only out-of-print but was also mono and the only two others in the CD catalogue are even older, mono off-the-air tapings, this stereo version from 1974, done for Cologne Radio and with one of Germany's finest old-school opera conductors, is a fine version to have. 2 CDs.
