Subtropical sundew care:Water & Humidity: Only use mineral free water such as distilled, reverse osmosis, or rainwater. In summer, I recommend placing the pots in a tray of standing water approx. 1”-2”. During winter, I keep their soil moist to damp, without standing water in their tray.Potting medium: Only use mineral free medium such as peat moss, long fibered sphagnum moss, perlite, sand.A common mix consists of 1:1 peat:perlite &/or sand, or pure long fibered sphagnum moss.Light: Sundews prefer 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily; this ensures the production of their tentacle dew (mucilage) and bright colored leaves.Temperature & Dormancy: They grow best with moderate temperatures of 50°F to 80°F but may handle temperatures down to 20°F and up to 100°F for short periods. Subtropical sundews will die down to the roots with consistent temperatures below 40°F and/or with shorter daylight hours. If their roots are kept consistently moist and not allowed to dry, they will regrow once it warms back up and daylight lengthens in the spring.Fertilization: This is not recommended for beginners as sundew roots are highly sensitive to minerals. They naturally catch insects outdoors, but if grown indoors they may be fed fish food flakes or bloodworms once a month, or Maxsea at a rate of ¼ tablespoon/gallon.
