Scout is a "tomboy," preferring overalls to dresses and she enjoys "fist fighting" with boys at recess. When Atticus Finch agreed to defend a Negro, TOM ROBINSON, who is accused of raping a white girl, MAYELLA EWELL, Scout and Jem and Dill sneak into the crowded Maycomb Courthouse where they sit in the balcony with the Negroes. When the jury reaches a verdict and find Tom's guilty, the courtroom cheers and slowly departs; however, the Negroes stand, and in the most dramatic scene in the novel, the negro minister tells Scout to stand up: "Your father is passing!" Later Mr. Ewell tries to hurt Scout and Jem when they are returning from a Halloween party in costume, but BOO RADLEY saves the children. "To Kill a Mockingbird" is an unforgettable novel of wisdom, humanity, passion, and humor, an evocative book of another era but relevant to our own times--an American classic.
