John Ernst Steinbeck, Jr., who lived from 1902 – 1968, grew up in Salinas, California, and attended Stanford University but after five years left without a degree. He published twenty-seven books. "The Winter of Our Discontent," published in 1961, was Steinbeck's last novel; the title comes from Shakespeare's "Richard III": "Now is the winter of our discontent/Made glorious summer by the sun of York." Set in New York, the novel is the story of Ethan Allen Hawley, a former member of Long Island's aristocratic class. His late father has lost the family fortune and Ethan is working as a grocery store clerk in the store he once owned. His wife Mary and their children resent their mediocre social and economic status. Ethan regains the ownership of the store by cheating his Italian store owner, Alfio Marullo. Ethan later gives Danny Taylor, the town drunk and his childhood friend, money to drink himself to death and Danny leaves Ethan land, but the novel does not end happily. Steinbeck was awarded the 1962 NOBEL PRIZE for Literature. 279 pages. I offer combined shipping.
