Description: Easton Press leather edition of Albert Garland and Howard Smyth, Assisted by Martin Blumenson's "Sicily and the Surrender of Italy," a COLLECTOR'S edition, Period Photographs, published in 1995. Bound in deep hunter green leather, the book has camel tan French moire end leaves, satin book marker, hubbed spine, acid-free paper, Symth-sewn binding, gold gilding on three edges---in near FINE condition---except for a 'very faint shadow' where a bookplate was cleanly removed from the inside fly leaf. COLLECTOR'S NOTES is included. In January 1943, President FRANKLIN ROOSEVELT met with British Prime Minister WINSTON CHURCHILL in Casablanca, French Morocco. From this meeting, the Allies proposed invasion of the Italian peninsula and the effective elimination of Italy from the war. The Allied invasion of Sicily took place from July 9---August 17, 1943. In a little more than a month, the fall of Sicily directly led to the fall of Italian dictator, BENITO MUSSOLINI and the surrender of the Italian government to the Allies. With the conclusion of the North Africa campaigns, the victorious Allies ejected the Axis powers in Tunisia and this led to the capture of more than 250,000 prisoners, many of whom were seasoned German veterans, along with hundreds of tanks and thousands of aircraft. The Allies captured more than a dozen generals. Many of the distinguished commanders of the Second World War participated including: BERNARD MONTGOMERY, ALBERT KESSELRING, GEORGE PATTON, OMAR BRADLEY, MATTHEW RIDGWAY, TERRY ALLEN, LUCIAN TRUSCOTT, BIUSEPPE CASSTELLANO, ADOLPH HITLER, BENITO MUSSONILINI, VICTOR EMMANUEL, ERWIN ROMMEL, WALTER SMITH, MARESCIALLO BADOGLIO, DWIGHT EISENHOWER, MARK CLARK, FDR, and CHURCHILL. The surrender eliminated a ground force of tremedous size that, even though ill-equipped and low in morale, had confounded and troubled Allied planners and intelligence experts. What the Allies really achieved by the Italian capitulation was an enormous psychological victory, not only in the eyes of the world, but, more important, for the fighting man. 609 pages.
