Description: This coin honors Antonio Jose de Sucre, who joined the fight for South American independence in 1814 at the age of 19. As a lieutenant to Simon Bolivar, he liberated "Upper Peru" from Spain in 1824 during the Battle of Ayacucho, and later became president of the newly formed Bolivia. In 1830, during a political dispute over the proposed severing of what is now Ecuador from Columbia (which he favored), he was ambushed by five gunmen and assassinated. Sucre is thus considered the martyred founder of Ecuador.
