Description: Elements of Art,A Poem; in Six Cantos; With notes and a preface;Including strictures on the state of the arts, criticism, patronage and public taste.By Martin Archer SheeWilliam Miller, publisherLondon 1809 SIZE: This book measures 5 and 1/2 inches by 8 and 1/2 inches. It contains 400 pages. CONDITION: Very good. Leather cover is rubbed and worn on the corners and edges, but holding tight. There is minor foxing on the interior. Gilding, including titles, text block and decoration, is shiny. There are no torn or missing pages. Original booksellers label is on the reverse of the front free end paper. CONTENT: The remaining three books of a previously written poem titled "Rhymes on Art." The author apologizes at the outset for the delay in completing a sequel to his essay that was well-received. I love this quote: "Rhymes are something like recruits, which may be raised in all situations, but to fit them for service requires the convenience of a parade, and the discipline of a drill." I wonder if his editor bought this reason for taking so long to complete the work. While there are many reprints of this book, very few originals are available for sale.
