Description: Item Description This listing is an original authentic watercolor of Roses in a Pitcher by Elisabeth Spalding (1868-1954). During the first half of the twentieth century she was generally considered to be “Colorado's best known woman artist.” The painting measures 20.5” X 14” and the outside of the frame is 30” X 22.5” This painting from 1895 is going to be one of her earliest works. During most of the 1890s she was studying from various master artists in France, England, and New York. In New York she studied under J. Alden Weir. In 1893, she served as one of the founding members of the Artist Club of Denver which officially became the Denver Art Museum in 1923. She was truly a pioneer in helping women play a greater role in the world of art during the early twentieth century. In addition, Spalding was a member of the New York Watercolor Club and of the Washington Watercolor Club. She exhibited her work in New York, Washington, Chicago and in Europe. She had one of only four paintings from Colorado that was displayed at the 1939 World's Fair in New York. One of her landscapes was hung at the Societe Nationale des Beaux Arts, Paris, in 1928. In 1932, she had a solo exhibitions of her watercolors in Stockholm and Paris. She primarily lived in Colorado and that is why I was rather fortunate to come across one of her works. Provenance This watercolor came from the historic Milo Smith House in Denver. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and believed to be the longest single occupied house in Denver. The same family inhabited it since it was built in 1890. They were a wealthy and influential family around the turn of the century. The last remaining family member passed away a year ago and since then the contents of the house have been auctioned off. The vast majority of items in the house date before 1920. Along with this painting came documentation that this painting was displayed on loan at the Spalding Rehabilitation Hospital from the owners of the Milo Smith House, Nancy and Robert Woodward. The hospital was named after Elisabeth's father Rev John Franklin Spalding who was one of the first bishops of the Colorado Diocese of the Episcopal Church. I have included pictures of the documentation that came with the painting. Along, with the estimate of its value at $1,800 back in 1990. It looks like the frame was redone in 1981 by the Turner Art Gallery. The framing was well done so I decided not to take the painting out of the frame to inspect the back. I do apologize that I cannot provide a picture of that to help verify the age. If that is going to be a deal breaker, let me know and I will consider taking it to a gallery to have that done. Item Condition I made sure to take as many pictures as possible. So please take a close look at the pictures for exact condition as I tried to take them from every angle possible. The only issue I could detect is that there looks to be a part of a crease around the middle of the vase. I made sure to include a close up picture of that. I am not an art historian, nor do I play one on TV, so I am not qualified to accurately grade this watercolor. I did inspect it under 60X magnification to verify it was an authentic watercolor. But that is limit of my skill. Shipping and Warranty This item has free shipping through USPS.
