The ruffed grouse, known as the king of gamebirds, is a very popular game bird in North America. It's roughly the size of a chicken, unlike this pipe that's in the lighter end of the 2.5 oz range. The name ''Ruffed'' is derived from the long shiny neck feathers. When the cock is defending his territory, or showing it off, these feathers are extended into a spectacular ruff which, together with a fully fanned tail, makes him look twice his normal size.
