In 1928-1932 studied at the Odesa Art School. In 1934-1937 studied at the Odesa Art College (Muchnik L.E., Krainev D.K.). In 1934 -1947 worked as a poster artist at the Mystetstvo publishing house. In 1937-1947 continued his studies at the painting department of the Kyiv Art Institute (Sharonov M.A., Shovkunenko A.A.). In 1942-1945. after graduating from the Kharkiv Tank School, fought in WWII (tank commander). In 1947-1949 worked as director of the Lebedinsky Art Institute, and since 1949 at the Museum of Western and Eastern Art (Odesa). Exhibition activities began in 1949. In 1956 the first personal exhibition was held in Odesa, at which 46 works were exhibited, and in 1988, more than 130 works were presented at the Odesa Art Museum. Since 1960 a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR. His works are in museum and private collections in Ukraine and abroad. Vasily Zaichenko died in 1985 in Odesa.
