Circular bronze medal; the face with a female head facing left and wearing a ribbon inscribed ‘SUFFRAGE UNIVERSELLE’, circumscribed ‘RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE’, signed ‘BARRE’ (for the great French medallist Albert Désiré Barre, 1818-1878), with bronze hallmark; the reverse inscribed ‘CENTENAIRE DE 1789’ below a five-pointed radiant star and within a wreath of oak and laurel, circumscribed ‘RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE * EXPOSITION UNIVERSELLE’; diameter 33mm (1.3 inches); weight 14.6 grams (0.5 oz). The Exhibition was held in Paris from 6 May to 31 October 1889 on the hundredth anniversary of the French Revolution and was most notable for the opening of the Eiffel Tower.
