By and large however the locomotives in this book are representative of the major steam power used by our largest railroad systems within the past fifty years. Each acquired its own status of prestige and, often veneration all out of proportion to any other type of machine ever built. The steam locomotive was a living being with an individual personality, sometimes cantankerous sometimes pleasant, usually reliable. It made our work harder at times. It kept us uncomfortable with its soot and cinders, its heat on one side and draftiness on the other. It gave us a hard ride when it wasn't well maintained or the track was rough. But it also gave us the thrill of mastery over time, distance, tonnage weather and machine. The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers salutes all those locomotive engineers who "brought her in on time." and hopes that you will enjoy this album. We pause to cherish the past but we continue to look forward to and work for the future, as we have done now for the past 111 years. All pictures are of the actual item.
