Description: Up for consideration is an extremely rare and historically significant Illustration of Filipino Warrier by Gregorio C. Coching. The work of art is very well done. It is signed and dated 1933 Gregorio. The artwork itself measures 12 by 18 with the overall dimensions being slightly larger. The work looks to be of Pastel and is a combination watercolor Pastel portrait. This lifelike yet hightly idealized portrait is right out of the early days of Filipino Comic and illustration works. Shortly before this time the young Greogorio had entered a writing contest for the "Liwayway" magazine in 1925. It was titled "Sanggumay" and of which he won first prize... The story was about a man who had fallen in love with a girl of questionable ethics and background...of which was quite a shocker back then. He devoted his life to her in changing her ways of which she saw his efforts as noble and fell in love with him...his work was entered in the magazine with great success and many works followed...he was soon in demand.. and within a few short years he had a many followers and his stories were being turned into movies... In 1948, Coching founded Balaghari (March 6, 1948), what may be considered as the third true komiks in Philippine comics history, after Halakhak Komiks and Pilipino Komiks. Very little, however, is known about Balaghari except that it contained tales of local myths and legends. Gregorio had a son named Francesco who went on to a very important comic illustrator in the 1950s and onward also. Coching the elder was still working in the 50's and 60's. Works by Francesco can be found and of course prices vary however pieces from his father which this one is are extremely rare and nonetheless historically significant. In fact there is no history of his works in the marketplace...and of which there is very little information out there he is not even listed in the art indexes...some of the information was gleaned from a site that referenced early comic history in the Philippines and that is it. Considering he was a pioneer and lead the way in the early days his contribitions to his field and his Country cannot really be assessed financially. This is a piece that should be in a museum and is more or less a National Treasure... if you have questions or something to share please message me buyer pays shipping. Please: note the seller retains the sole right to this work of art up into such time that the work of art transfers ownerhip to the new owner buyer.. the unauthorized use of this photo without the written consent by me the owner may result in legal action and is considered copyright infringement....
