Description: This is really a beautiful mask from the Grasslands of central or western Africa, amazingly carved from a single piece of wood including the oversized ears if, in fact, that is what they are since there are also scale-appropriate ears below. Are they a stylized hair style or maybe horns? Even the neatly faceted teeth use this same piece of wood. The surface patina is rough and encrusted as you can see from my pictures. Old remnant deposits of kaolin in the ears, eyes and mouth indicate that this mask was probably more colorful at one time. Its condition is excellent. There is a shrinkage crack from the chin to the mouth, not visible from the front and perfecty stable. There are some minor rim chips but overall it is in very fine condition. There are no sight holes or attachment holes so it is unknown (by me) how this was used. The mask is 15" tall. It is ready to hang. U.S. buyers please. [Boston Primitive]
