He was born in Germany in 1826 and educated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cassel and at Städel's Institute in Frankfort-on-the-Main. In 1850 he established a lithographic business in New York and produced thousands of stunningly beautiful prints, maps, atlases plus geological and hydrographic charts. He was a pioneer in the development of chromo-lithography and received medals and diplomas from numerous international exhibitions including Philadelphia in 1876; Paris in 1878; Chicago in 1893; and Paris in 1900. He served as President of the National Lithographers' Association from 1886 to 1896. The page measures approximately 9.75" by 6.75"and has a blank reverse.
