Description: France: 1st type silver Colonial Medal with the "a'clapet" bar, Algerie. The Colonial medal was created 26 July 1893, and served as a campaign medal for French soldiers and sailors that participated in France’s many colonial conflicts or expeditions that did not merit a dedicated campaign medal. A particular campaign or expedition was simply recognized by the addition of a bar on the ribbon of the medal, as in this case, for service in Algeria. The first issue Colonial medals were struck in silver, have a double-sided wreath suspension and the “a’clapet” style ribbon bars that fasten into place by snapping the hinged lever on the back; these original bars were used only for a short time and are scarce. The medal is marked “ARGENT” on the rim at the 6 o’clock position; the wreath suspension and the bar are also hallmarked. The name of the engraver, Georges Lemaire, appears at the 6 o’clock position on the obverse. Later versions of the Colonial medal were silvered bronze, had a one-sided wreath suspension and had the name of a different engraver. The medal and bar are in near extremely fine condition; on what is almost certainly the original ribbon; and on the French-style ball-and-rod suspension.
