Description: *NOTE TO EBAY - THESE BOXES ARE EMPTY AND DO NOT CONTAIN ANY RESTRICTED AMMUNITION COMPONENTS*Up for your consideration is a set of two empty reproduction CALIBER .30 M2 BALL (IN CLIPS) 20 round ammunition cartons with a FRANKFORD ARSENAL label.The M2 Ball round officially replaced the M1 Ball round in January 1940, and much of the early Frankford production was packed in stripper clips for use in the M1903 Springfield-model rifle. The labels were then marked "IN CLIPS" on the top so as to differentiate those rounds from standard, loose rounds. The .30-06 cartridge, first developed in 1906, was the official U.S. rifle and light machine gun cartridge in both World Wars and Korea, with combat use finally ending in the 1960s. The huge quantities of ammunition required for World War II dramatically reflected the impact on warfare of rapid-fire weapons like the machine gun and semi-automatic rifle. Total small arms ammunition production from 1940-1945 exceeded 41.7 billion rounds, and of that total the Caliber .30 round accounted for 25 billion rounds in all loadings. During the 1930s Frankford was the only plant in the U.S. producing military small arms ammunition. It also carried out the bulk of the research and development work on small arms ammunition, and personnel from the Arsenal formed the nucleus for the expansion program when the "waves" of other plants were built. In October 1941, the Arsenal was put on a 24-hour basis to manufacture the necessary ammunition for the expanding armed forces. Daily production included 9 types of .30 caliber loadings, and 5 types of .50 caliber loadings. Frankford Arsenal was not closed down at the end of the war, continuing operations until 1977, when it was finally shut down for good.Each "Buy It Now" single purchase is for 2 unassembled cartons with dividers and labels. The Frankford Arsenal label has the unique WWII red stripe, which identified the contents as ball ammunition, and a lot number matching my original. The top of the label is marked "IN CLIPS", also matching my original. The cartons, dividers, and labels will be shipped flat, with assembly instructions.
