Description: A FANTASTIC LENGTHY INSCRIPTION ON AN 8X10 INCH PHOTO BY FREDDIE KRUEGER HIMSELF ROBERT ENGLUND TO ELISAALL THE BESTAND THANKSFOR THE GREAT INTERVIEW- SEE YOU IN SANTA MONICA-LOVE AND ALIEN HUGS-ROBERT ENGLUND After five years of success in regional theater Robert Englund returned to the west coast where he had grown up. His very first audition landed him a starring role in the 1973 film Buster and Billie directed by Daniel Petrie. Far from living the classic hand to mouth existence of a struggling actor, Englund worked steadily through the 70's playing best friends, bad guy #1 and southern red-necks and starring opposite Henry Fonda, Susan Sarandon, Jeff Bridges, Sally Field and Arnold Schwarzenegger among others. In the 70's, regarded as the second Golden Age of American movies, Englund was privileged to work for such classic film directors as Robert Aldrich, Robert Mulligan, J. Lee Thompson, Bob Rafelson and John Milius. During this time Englund was living in Malibu, fishing off his porch at high tide and surfing when not slogging through traffic on the seemingly endless rounds of interviews and call-backs that fill the days of every working actor. He guest starred in scores of TV shows as well as working alongside some of the biggest stars of that decade including Barbra Streisand, Richard Gere, Burt Reynolds and Charles Bronson. Finally audiences could put a name to his familiar face when Englund was cast as Willie the friendly alien in the hit mini-series and subsequent weekly TV show V. Within weeks, Englund went from questions like: Didnt I go to high school with you to Arent you that lizard guy on TV. Over twenty-five years later Willie still generates fan mail from science fiction devotees both in America and around the world. The series was a huge success. As a result Englund figured he would be eternally typecast as a sweet and lovable alien. To counter-balance this public image, he looked for a role that would allow him to demonstrate another side of his talents. During one hiatus from filming the series, he auditioned for a hot young director making an interesting low budget horror movie for the independent studio New Line Cinema. Englund's interview with Wes Craven landed him the role playing the burn scarred dream demon Freddy Krueger in A Nightmare on Elm Street and launched him into horror history. An international hit, the movie made New Line Cinema a major Hollywood player and prompted seven sequels and a syndicated TV series. The character of Freddy Krueger has appeared on talk shows, comic books, rap videos, and even a cartoon appearance as a guest on The Simpsons. There are numerous Freddy Krueger action figures, dolls, and attendant merchandising. Gottlieb came out with a very popular pin-ball machine based on the movies. Englund's portrayal of Freddy Krueger blasted him into the pop culture vernacular as heir apparent to the horror icons of the past, destined to stand alongside Lon Chaney's Phantom of the Opera and Boris Karloff's monster in Frankenstein. In the mid 80's Englund starred in the hour long network TV series Downtown, a serio-comic look at parolees. The short lived series also starred Blair Underwood and Marishka Hargitay. Acting on the small screen afforded Englund the opportunity to work with such diverse talent as Lillian Gish, Jack Warden, Sissy Spacek, Martin Balsam, Richard Thomas, James Earl Jones, Bruce Davidson, Lou Gosset and Hal Holbrook. The international success of V and the Nightmare on Elm Street sequels opened the door for film work abroad. Englund has starred in movies shot in such exotic locales as Budapest, St. Petersburg, Tel Aviv, Johannesburg, Madrid, Palermo, Barcelona and Zagreb. Englund is sought after as a guest at film festivals all over Europe and has served on juries and been celebrated with awards at festivals in Paris, Rome, Brussels and Sitges (Spain) to name a few. After over 75 feature length films, four TV series and countless episodic guest star roles - the most recent being guest leads on Criminal Minds and Workaholics, Englund is now directing as well as acting, and exploring the world of reality television and internet programming. He can currently be seen co-starring with Malcolm McDowell and John Glover in the film Sanitarium. Two movies, The Last Showing with Finn Jones and the horror pic Fear Clinic with Thomas Dekker, will be released in 2014. Robert Barton Englund (born June 6, 1947) is an American actor, voice actor, singer, and director, best known for playing the infamous serial killer Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street film series. He received a Saturn Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors in 1987 and A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master in 1988, and won a Fantafestival Award for The Mangler in 1995. Englund is a classically trained actor.[1][2] Contents1Early life2Career3Filmography3.1Film3.2Television3.3Music videos3.4Web3.5Video games4References5External linksEarly lifeEnglund was born on June 6, 1947, in Glendale, California, the son of Janis (née MacDonald) and John Kent Englund, an aeronautics engineer who helped develop the Lockheed U-2 airplane.[3][4] He is of part Swedish ancestry and part Scottish. Englund began studying acting at the age of twelve, accompanying a friend to a children's theater program at California State University, Northridge.[5][6] While he was in high school, he attended the Cranbrook Theatre School (organized by the Cranbrook Educational Community) in Bloomfield Hills. He then attended UCLA for three years, before dropping out and transferring to Michigan's Oakland University, where he trained at the Meadow Brook Theater,[3] at the time a branch of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.[1][dead link] Englund had five successful years performing in regional theater[7] including plays by Shakespeare and Bernard Shaw. He married for the first time in 1968 to a nurse Elizabeth Gardner, whom he divorced in 1972.[8] Shortly afterward, he returned to the West Coast in search of film work, and landed a supporting role in the film Buster and Billie, directed by Daniel Petrie.[7] CareerEnglund was briefly considered for a part in the 1977 film Star Wars and, apocryphally, told his close friend Mark Hamill, who was sleeping on his couch, to go audition for the role of young Luke Skywalker, for which Hamill ultimately was cast.[9][10] Englund appeared in the 1977 film Eaten Alive directed by Tobe Hooper. He then played Ranger in Galaxy of Terror, produced by Roger Corman, which was released in 1981. Since then, Englund has made over 100 appearances on film and television. In his early film roles Englund was usually typecast as a nerd or a redneck, and he first gained attention in the role of Visitor technician and resistance fighter Willie in the 1983 miniseries V, as well as the 1984 sequel V: The Final Battle, and V: The Series, in which he was a regular cast member. But after such typecasting, Englund went against type when he accepted the role of Freddy Krueger, the psychotic burn victim and child murderer in Wes Craven's hugely successful A Nightmare on Elm Street in 1984. His association with the genre led him to top-billed roles in The Phantom of the Opera (1989), The Mangler (1995) – another film directed by Tobe Hooper, and 2001 Maniacs (2005). He reprised his role as Freddy Krueger in A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985), A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987), A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988), A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child (1989), Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991), Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994) and Freddy vs. Jason (2003).[11] Englund is one of only three actors to portray a horror character eight consecutive times,[citation needed] the other two being Doug Bradley, who portrayed the Pinhead character eight times in the Hellraiser film series[citation needed] and Tobin Bell who played Jigsaw.[citation needed] Englund has said that he enjoys the role of Freddy as it gives him a break from always acting out the nice guy;[citation needed] indeed, many people[who?] who have worked with Englund attest to his congeniality. Makeup artists responsible for the Krueger makeup have commented that Englund was so friendly and talkative that it made the lengthy makeup application slightly more challenging.[citation needed] Englund's TV appearances include starring in the short-lived series Nightmare Cafe (1992), in which he played Blackie, the mysterious proprietor of the title cafe, and reprising his role of "Freddy Krueger" in the series Freddy's Nightmares – A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Series. His guest roles include the science fiction series Babylon 5, one episode of the show MacGyver as Tim Wexler, Masters of Horror, MadTV, Sliders, and Knight Rider, where he appeared as a phantom haunting a film studio, and Walking Tall: The Series as well as a guest star spot on the hit TV show Walker, Texas Ranger. His work in voice-over animation includes magician Felix Faust in Justice League, The Riddler on The Batman, The Vulture on The Spectacular Spider-Man, and as Dormammu on The Super Hero Squad Show. On the TV witch drama Charmed (Episode: "Size Matters"), he appeared as a demon who used the services of a lackey to lure people into a decrepit household (where he lived in the walls) and shrank them down to action figure size. He also appeared on an episode of Married...With Children as The Devil. He appeared most recently, in one episode of the 2010 season of the television spy send-up Chuck, as a scientist who created a fear-inducing nerve toxin, a similar character to the Scarecrow, one of Batman's enemies in the DC Comics (A character he would later portray in the video game Injustice 2). Englund performed as host of the Horror Hall of Fame awards show three times from 1989 to 1991.[6] Englund in 2005Englund made his directorial debut with the 1988 horror film 976-EVIL, co-written by future Oscar winner Brian Helgeland and starring Stephen Geoffreys. During production, Englund met set decorator Nancy Booth, whom he would marry.[6] His second feature, Killer Pad, was released direct-to-DVD in 2008. As of the beginning of July 2013, he was in pre-production to direct The Vij, about a young priest who is led by an evil genie to commit murder, and who falls in love with an old witch who is not what she seems. Englund also directed 2 episodes of “Freddy's Nightmares” first was “Cabin Fever” and the second “Monkey Dreams” Englund in 2008. His memoir, Hollywood Monster: A Walk Down Elm Street with the Man of Your Dreams, which Alan Goldsher transcribed from his dictations, was published by Pocket Books on October 13, 2009. Recently he had starred in the web series "Fear Clinic",[12][failed verification] where he appeared in five episodes as Dr. Andover.[13][failed verification] Englund in the 2014 Fan Expo CanadaEnglund recently noted he would welcome a guest appearance in the ABC revival of V in an interview with Todd Sokolove from Forces of Geek.[14] But the series was canceled before he could make such a guest appearance. In January 2010, it was announced that Englund would return as Jackson Roth for the sequel to Dee Snider's Strangeland, titled Strangeland II: Disciple.[15] However, as of December 2010, no specific dates or plans had been made regarding the project. Englund made a guest appearance in "The Death of the Queen Bee" episode of Bones,[16] appearing as a quirky janitor at protagonist Dr. Temperance Brennan's old high school.[17][failed verification] His character, a friend of Brennan's, and situation were introduced as "very creepy... it's like Freddy creepy." Englund was a special guest at the 2010 Streamy Awards,[18][failed verification] and also appeared as a special guest of the CA Weekend of Horrors on 8 October 2010.[19] Englund appeared on the Creation Entertainment Weekend of Horrors in May 2010.[20][failed verification] In May 2010, he was signed for the American independent thriller Inkubus.[21][failed verification] Englund appeared as himself in the new Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies map, "Call of the Dead" as one of the playable characters, and acted out the part of a Halloween-themed serial killer in the 2010s revival of Hawaii Five-0. He also took part in a Halloween "Come dine with me" for Channel 4 in 2012. He also appeared in Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer and Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon.[22] Although the character of Freddy Krueger is regarded as one of the most terrifying in cinema history, Englund is often described by fellow actors and film crews as being extremely friendly and appreciative of his fans, many admitting that his portrayal of Krueger frightened them as children. He recently starred in The Last Showing and Fear Clinic, the latter was released on October 22, 2014 at the Screamfest Film Festival. Englund was also a special guest at Shock Comic Con on Valentine's Day 2015.[23] In February 2016, Englund hosted a "Nightmare on Elm Street" marathon on El Rey Network.[24] As of 2020, Englund hosts the Travel Channel show True Terror with Robert Englund, which showcases scary but true stories about the supernatural or strange.[25][26] FilmographyFilmYearTitleRoleNotes1974Buster and BillieWhitey1975SunburstMichael Sutherland1975HustleHold-up Man1976Stay HungryFranklin1976St. IvesHood #11976Eaten AliveBuck1976A Star is BornMartyUncredited1977The Great Smokey RoadblockBeebo Crozier1978Big WednesdayNarrator, Fly1978BloodbrothersMott1978The Fifth FloorBenny1981Dead & BuriedHarry1981Galaxy of TerrorRanger1982Don't Cry, It's Only ThunderTripper1984A Nightmare on Elm StreetFreddy Krueger1985A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's RevengeFreddy Krueger / Bus Driver1986Never Too Young to DieRiley1987A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream WarriorsFreddy Krueger1988A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream MasterFreddy Krueger / Nurse1988976-EVILDirector1989CHUD II: Bud the CHUDMan in Trenchcoat Walking with Trick-or-TreatersUncredited1989A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream ChildFreddy Krueger / Maniac1989The Phantom of the OperaErik Destler / The Phantom1990The Adventures of Ford FairlaneSmiley1991Freddy's Dead: The Final NightmareFreddy Krueger1992Dance MacabreAnthony Wager / Madame1993Tobe Hooper's Night TerrorsPaul Chevalier / Marquis De Sade1994Wes Craven's New NightmareHimself / Freddy Krueger1995The ManglerBill Gartley1996Killer TonguePrison Director1996The Paper BrigadeCrazy Man Cooper1996The Vampyre Wars1997Perfect TargetColonel Shakwell1997WishmasterRaymond Beaumont1998Meet the DeedlesNemo1998Urban LegendProfessor Wexler1998StrangelandJackson "Jack" Roth1999Idle Handsthe HandVoice1999The Prince and the SurferKratski2001Wish You Were DeadBernie Garces2003Freddy vs. JasonFreddy Krueger2003As a Bad DreamProfessor2003The Return of CagliostroErroll Douglas(Il ritorno di Cagliostro)2003Nobody Knows Anything!Jack Sampson20052001 ManiacsMayor George W.
