Joe McCarthy was both a product and a shaper of his times. Patriotic fervor at the end of World War II enabled him to use a trumped-up record as a "war hero" to win election to the Senate. Thus began the nightmare McCarthy years. McCarthy's reckless accusations dishonored and ruined countless in-nocent, distinguished and honorable citizens. In the end, McCarthy was defeated by his own arrogance and the eloquence of a lawyer named Joseph Welch, who dared stand up to him and his cocky young aide, Roy Cohn, as they attempted to pillory the U.S. Army before millions of television viewers. When the American people at last awoke to the truth about McCarthy and his methods, his power vanished as swiftly as it had arisen.
