By Reuben L. Underhill. Inscribed & Signed by Author, Stafford Univ. Press 1939, First Edition, Illustrated, Index, 273 pages. FINE CONDITION. THOMAS OLIVER LARKIN 1802-1858, American Merchant and diplomat, actively promoted the Bear Flag Revolt in California and helped wrest that province from Mexico for the United States. In 1835 he built his wife a house in Monterey that mixed New England & California architectural styles and which is today known as Larkin House. (See Photo). He built the first wharf for ships and was commissioned to rebuild Monterey Customs House. He engaged in trade with Mexico, the Sandwich Islands & China. In 1844 Larkin Was appointed American consul at Monterey, a position he held until 1848. He qualified for the consulship because, unlike many other American immigrants, he had never been naturalized a Mexican citizen. Larkin held other governmental positions in California. He was a naval storekeeper (1847-48), and a Navy agent (1847-49). These two jobs were routine, but his appointment as a confidential agent (1846-48) brought him into the conflict for California. In short, he was to promote a revolution that would eventually bring annexation. In his last years, Larkin engaged in land speculation and was thought by some to be the richest man in America. On Oct. 27, 1858 he contracted typhoid fever and died within a week. Shipping : We can combine shipping on multiple orders. I will notify you when item has been shipped.
