Description: This is a pretty, small bowl handmade in Iceland dating to the 1970s. It is encrusted with a band of actual lava rocks, called “hraun,” that have been applied to the piece prior to glazing. The inside of the bowl is an orange-rust color that complements the brown exterior. The diameter of the bowl’s opening is approximately 3.5” and the overall diameter is about 4.25”, taking into account the hraun band. The height is 2.5”. The condition is extremely good. There is one small chipped off spot on the hraun band (see photo where I point with a skewer.) It is not terribly noticeable and the bowl is very clean otherwise. There are no cracks or scratches on the bowl. The base is stamped: “Funi Island Handmade in Iceland”. There is some anti-slip felt material along the rim of the base. This is a nice piece, and a great gift option for someone who has been to Iceland or has an interest in volcanoes or Iceland in general. From the web: “Unlike asian pottery, with its clean lines and beautiful glazes, or even southwestern pottery, with its bold symmetric designs, Icelandic pottery delights in its roughness. The movement started in the 60s with the inclusion of hraun (lava rocks) into the glaze, or embedded into the form. More modern pieces are less apt to use rough hewn hraun.”
