Description: This is a smart George III Sterling Silver Punch Ladle with a twisted bone handle. The bowl and shaft are in silver and there is a silver finial at the top of the bone stem. The front of the ladle is engraved with the initials C C P in 18th century style. The ladle was made in London by silversmith Joseph Steward Jnr and dates to 1789. Joseph Steward Snr was the son of an Essex blacksmith who registered his first mark at Goldsmith’s Hall in London in 1719. He was a smallworker who primarily produced items of tableware and flatware. He remained active into the 1750s. His son, Joseph Jnr registered his mark in 1755, probably taking over his father’s business and remaining active into the 1790s. His son John then took over the business but disappears by the end of the century. Condition is fair with the bowl of the ladle showing clear signs of use but no splits or damage. The bone handle is in good condition and the ladle remains perfectly usable after 235 years. Please make sure to view all the photographs as these form part of the description. The punch ladle is 36.5cm / 14.4ins long and 7.6cm / 3ins across the bowl. It weighs in at 48.3g / 1.7oz. The hallmarks, on the outside of the bowl, are slightly rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter o for 1789, the George III duty mark and the I S makers' mark for Joseph Steward Jnr.
