Description: INTERNATIONAL BUYERS:? The shipping rates shown are for '1st Class International Package' with tracking.? Ebay is also promoting their EIS International Shipping program on sellers pages. I do not use this program because it is more expensive, slower, not very transparent, and frustrating to the buyer, if something goes wrong. Do not select it, if ebay does show it as an option. Thank you. Print Specifics: Type of print: Steel engraving (intaglio) - Original antique printYear of printing: not indicated. Best estimate: early 1860s Publisher: A. BC Doric temple, one of the best preserved in the Greek world, stands on a mound 217 ft dominating the agora, the center of Athenian public life in antiquity. Known since the Middle Ages as the Theseion (temple of Theseus). It is in fact the Hephaistelon mentioned by Pausanias, the temple of Hephaistos, god of smiths and metal workers who were as numerous then as they are today in the neighboring district . In the Byzantine period the temple was converted into a church dedicated to St George and the entrance was moved to the west end. Under the Turks it became the burial place of Englishmen and other Protestants; some of the memorial plaques have been transferred to St Paul's Anglican Church. Even in the last century it was still out in the country and on Easter Sunday people would come from Athens dressed in their best to dance nearby. The last service was held in 1834 when the building was used to house the first collections of the National Museum. Pomegranates and myrtle trees have been planted round the temple to recall the trees which covered the slopes in antiquity. The Hephaisteion, which is older and smaller than the Parthenon, is built of stone rather than marble but it is well proportioned and was originally painted. It measures 104ft by 45ft and has 26 columns down each side and 12 at each end which narrow towards the top and incline slightly inwards. The sculptures of the external frieze, which are badly damaged and difficult to discern, recall the exploits of Herakles (Hercules) and Theseus. The east portico with its marble coffered ceiling still in place leads into the naĆ³s, which resembles the nave of a church with its doorways and barrel vaulting (5C AD); one of the funerary plaques on the north wall in memory of George Watson, who died in Athens in 1810, bears a Latin inscription by Byron.
