Hand Made White Oak Crotch Wood Tote for Larger Stanley And Other Hand Planes

Description: Hand made, by me, white oak crotch wood plane tote. I had a piece of white oak let over from another project. It was the end of a board that evidently was either a branch crotch or stump. The unusual grain ran in both directions and swirled. As woodworkers know, wood is strong across the grain but weaker along the grain. Totes with normal grain will have a plane of weakness, where breakage usually occurs. Nature makes the crotch, where branch meets the trunk, particularly strong to support the weight of the branch. This makes it ideal for the tote to resist breakage. You can see the grain patterns in the photos. The wood is tough and it was difficult to shape. After cutting the general outside with the bandsaw, the rest was shaped by sanding, mostly on an oscillating spindle sander. The wood is hard and just tough, and it took time. It is a little bigger than the standard Stanley totes, about 1-1/8” thick x 1-5/16” in the middle. Feels very comfortable. To determine whether it will fit a certain plane,we’ll have to go by measurements and possibly make adjustments. It is 4” tall measured across the center of the bolt holes. It’s 4-3/8” tip of horn to back of heel. The bottom is 3-13/16” , longer than stock Stanley. I glued a small piece on tip of the toe to ensure it would be plenty long, most or all will probably need to be trimmed. Unless you are sure it will fit your plane and you can make any adjustments, message me on eBay so we can compare totes. I can make adjustments if needed. I’m pretty sure it will fit most Stanley transitional wood bottom planes of the larger sizes, and most Stanley bench planes from No. 5 and up., and the carriage makers planes too. Also older wooden planes. I don’t have the barrel bolt but around 4” or longer should work.
