Description: HARRIET HOSMER A HIGH QUALITY STEEL ENGRAVING BOOKPLATE FROM THE 1860's!! PERFECT FOR FRAMING AS AN ART PRINT FOR YOUR DEN !! VERY ANTIQUE & OLD WORLD LOOKING. ITEM(s) OVER 135 YEARS OLD!! Harriet Goodhue Hosmer, was born in Watertown, Mass., Oct. 9, 1830. She was one of the best-known American sculptors of her generation. Her Puck (1856; National Collection of Fine Arts, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.), which portrays the fairy as a willful baby, was immensely popular. Equally well received was her Zenobia (1859; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City), in which the warrior queen of ancient Palmyra, who was defeated and taken captive by the Romans, is depicted in classical drapery but bedecked with Oriental adornments. Although executed in a late neoclassical style, the Zenobia's overall theme of defeat and the specificity of its exotic detail reveal the influence on the sculptor of romantic art.
