Description: Henry Brockholst Livingston – Supreme Court Justice. Signed document, Dec. 15, 1806, 1 page, 7 x 8. Brockholst appoints attorney Morris Benjamin as his legal representative in receiving any funds or settling the estate of his aunt Sarah Livingston Alexander who died a year earlier. He boldly signs his name “Brockholst Livingston” and adds a legal title of two or three words below. (He dropped his first name early in his career to avoid confusion with relatives of the same name.) The last four letters of his signature run onto a small paper seal. Livingston was serving as a Justice under a recess appointment. Jefferson formally nominated him just two days earlier and he was confirmed two days after signing this document. He served until his death in 1823. During the Revolution, Livingston was a Lt. Col and served as an aide-de-camp to Benedict Arnold. His brother-in-law was John Jay, the Court’s first Chief Justice. Another sister was stepmother to Anna Symmes who married William Henry Harrison, the future 9th President. Livingston’s signatures are uncommon to scarce. This is a particularly clean example of a full document with nice family association the week he was nominated and confirmed to the Court. This item is offered by Custodians of History, Inc.
