Description: the self-portrait of- SIR EDWIN LANDSEER, R. A.(1802-1873)- original wood engraving cover of HARPER'S WEEKLY October 25, 1873 The actual artwork measures 10 3/4" x 9." The entire Harper's front cover measures 14 3/4" x 11 1/2." Although there exists a steel engraving by Samuel Cousins, it is my understanding that the present work is a wood engraving, and was probably executed by one of Harper's staff. The work is in good condition as illustrated, with a few chips on the left and right edges. The sheet is backed with foam core and shrink-wrapped, just as I purchased it. This would mat and frame beautifully! This was most likely chosen for the Harper's cover because of Landseer's death a few weeks prior, on October 1st. Although Harper's titled the work The Connoisseurs, referring to the two curious dogs, the actual title is Portrait of the Artist with two Dogs. Landseer was an English painter and sculptor, well known for his paintings of animals-- particularly horses, dogs, and stags. He was a favorite of Queen Victoria, who commissioned numerous pictures of herself, her children, gamekeepers, and royal pets. The Harper's engraving is Landseer's self-portrait and it is now in the Royal Collection. TRIVIA: Landseer was rumoured to be able to paint with both hands at the same time, for example, paint a horse's head with the right and its tail with the left, simultaneously. This is absolutely guaranteed to be an original 19th Century work, not any type of reprint or reproduction.This has been in my collection for about thirty years, probably originally purchased at Brimfield.
