Description: This is a brilliant, nearly uncirculated coin honoring Sandor Petofi, one of the leaders of the 1848 Hungarian Revolution that grew into the war for independence from the Austrian Habsburg Empire. An avowed liberal and folk poet, he wrote the revolutionaries' petition to the Empire, known as the "12 Points," as well as their inspirational poem. Petofi joined the revolutionary army, which won initial battles against the Habsburgs. But the tide turned when Russia intervened, and Petofi went missing at the Battle of Segesvar in 1849. His body was never recovered, and he was presumed killed in action. A sample of his heroic poetic style, translated from Hungarian in If Born a Man, Then Be a Man: If born a man, then be a man,And not a wretched grubThat pusillanimously bearsFate's every knock and rub!Fate is a cur that only barksBut fears a manly blow; A man must ever ready be,Bravely to meet his foe!
