Description: THE CURSE OF LONO - INSCRIBED BY STEADMAN TO THE DEDICATEE, VIRGINIA THOMPSON Author: Thompson, Hunter S. (text); Steadman, Ralph (illustrations) Title: THE CURSE OF LONO - INSCRIBED BY STEADMAN TO THE DEDICATEE, VIRGINIA THOMPSON Publication: London: Picador / PAN Books Ltd., 1983 Description: On May 23, 1980, Paul Perry (editor of Running magazine) wrote Thompson and asked him to cover the 1980 Honolulu Marathon (all expenses paid). Thompson, accompanied by Ralph Steadman, made the trip to Hawaii, which resulted in their collaborative Gonzo piece "The Charge of the Weird Brigade." It was considerably expanded and published by as The Curse of Lono in 1983. The book was popular at the time of publication, going into ten printings in the U.S., and two in the U.K. It would not see publication again in the U.S. until the Taschen hardcover was released in 2004. In his 2006 memoir The Joke's Over, Steadman recalls the first time he met the mother of his long-time friend and collaborator, while passing through Louisville. She was in her nineties then, and living in a rest home. He describes the woman who produced the king of Gonzo journalism thusly: "I pushed open the door...and diametrically opposite from me, across the room, sat a tall, handsome, big-boned lady in a Lazy Boy chair with a king-sized filter tip in her hand and a freshly poured bourbon in front of her on what looked like a drinks trolley zimmerframe." A distinguished copy; Hunter's printed dedication along the lower copyright page reads "To my Mother, Virginia Ray Thompson." Kentucky. Shoaf A11b. Second Impression. Small quarto (25.5cm); original pictorial card wrappers; [7],8-158,[2]pp; illus. Inscribed by Steadman on the verso of the front wrapper to Virginia Ray Thompson (1908-1998): "For Hunter's Mother / Virginia / from Ralph Steadman / 12 Aug. 87."
