Description: This vintage decorative shepherd's axe is handmade in Western Ukraine (Carpathian Mountains) in 1980s. The axe is made out of wood and the wood carving makes it absolutely beautiful. The shepherd's axe is a long thin light axe of Eurasian origin used in past centuries by Hutsuls shepherds in the Carpathian Mountains; Hutsuls (an ethnology-cultural group of Ukrainians who inhabit the Carpathian Mountains) called such an axe bartka or valashka. Also the shepherds' axes were used in other territories which comprise today Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland, Ukraine, Romania and Hungary. The features of a shepherd's axe combine a tool with a walking stick, that could be used as a light weapon. It has symbolic historical and cultural connotations and is still used as a prop in many traditional dances. Length is 34”; axe head 5.5 x 3.25”. This decorative shepherd axe will look beautiful on the wall or any other places in the house or office.
