From the back : I Speak for Lebanon is the political testament of Kamal Joumblatt, a great Arab leader. Here he describes his political, military and social strategy during the Lebanese Civil War - a bitter conflict which is far from over. He draws on his experience as a religious leader, government minister, military commander and international negotiator to illuminate the complex panorama of Lebanon. His deep insights into the Maronite Christian leadership, the Palestinians, and the motivations of President Assad's Syrian regime are especially revealing. The origins and development of the conflict are fully analysed in the context of regional politics, super-power objectives, and Lebanon's diverse cultural heritage. Kamal Joumblatt was, until his tragic death, the head of one of the leading Druze families in the Lebanon. He studied law and philosophy at the Sorbonne and then at the Jesuit University in Beirut. Elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1946, he founded the Progressive Socialist Party. He opposed the despatch of U.S. Marines to the Lebanon in 1958, and struggled consistently for a Lebanese political system that would reject confessionalism and communal prejudice on the one hand, and support the Palestinians and anti-imperialism on the other. By 1975 he had become the major figure on the left in the country. As leader of the Lebanese National Movement, he played a central role in the Civil War, and strongly opposed the Syrian invasion which ensued. He was brutally murdered shortly after this book was completed. Rebel, statesman and mystic, his dedication to the Lebanese idea was beyond question. From this autobiography there emerges a moving portrait of one of the Arab world's most engaging political figures - a man warm and strong, complex and idealistic, committed always to social justice, genuine independence and the cultural renaissance of the Arab World.
