Description: This is a historical and Important Antique Old Western Native Indian Chief Oil Painting on canvas, depicting a Native American chieftain identified as "Shorte Horse." Based on my research, he is likely either a Lakota Sioux or Comanche leader. I could not find any information on this person, but perhaps you know more about him? He is portrayed in a dignified manner, with an eagle feather headdress, gold locket, and a green woven blanket over one shoulder. Approximately 10 3/4 x 12 3/4 inches (including frame.) Actual artwork is approximately 8 x 10 inches. This work is unsigned, but some writing in graphite on the top stretcher bar of the verso identifies the sitter as "Shorte Horse." Additionally, some writing on the lower stretcher bar reads: "No. 180." This painting approximately dates to the 1920's - 1930's. Very good condition for age, with some light craquelure in some places and mild edge wear to the frame (please see photos.) This work was acquired from an old estate in Pasadena, California.
